New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) is refreshing its technology platform to ensure Aotearoa's national eResearch infrastructure and services are more accessible, responsive, and flexible to the needs of researchers.NeSI, together with Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland; Te Whare Wānanga o Otāgo, University of Otago; and Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, is partnering broadly with technology providers to deliver next-generation compute, storage, and software solutions for modern day science.

The Carpentries is a global program to teach foundational computational and data management skills to researchers. New Zealand trains several potential Carpentries Instructor trainees every year and it is time to train a new cohort of future instructors.Our next Carpentries Instructor training course will be held virtually on March 5,6,7 and 8 from 2pm to 6pm NZT.

Nisha Ghatak, NeSI Research Communities Advisor and Training Lead, has been elected to the Board of Directors of The Carpentries, a global community focused on teaching coding and data science skills to researchers worldwide. It's an exciting opportunity to leverage the voices of South Pacific training communities as well as help bridge international knowledge or collaborations into local initiatives.
When Cyclone Gabrielle blew through Aotearoa in February 2023, it unleashed unprecedented rainfall, triggered widespread flooding and landslip events, and caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure across northern and eastern regions of the North Island. With many affected areas, businesses and individuals still recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle's effects, it was a timely real-world example to incorporate into the Antarctic Science Platform's (ASP) 2023 Winter School in September.
