The team here at NeSI would like to wish you all a very fun festive season. We're all looking forward to a short break over summer, then coming back in January ready for a very busy and exciting 2017!

eRNZ 2017 - Programme announcement

We are delighted to announce the programme for eResearchNZ 2017 is now available and can be viewed on the conference website.

“We are pleased with the calibre and diversity of the eResearch programme for 2017. The conference reflects a balance between technical infrastructure, research and sector strategy, designed to showcase exciting innovations from both a national and international perspective. On behalf of the eResearch collaboration of REANNZ, NeSI and NZGL, I would like to invite you to join us in Queenstown for this special event to share the learning and insights of leaders and innovators from across the research community”.

NeSI @ Otago day

NeSI provides a range of services supporting researchers across disciplines at a number of institutions in New Zealand.

The University of Otago is one of the most active sites in terms of usage of the e-infrastructure and related services.

On October 30 the university held a "NeSI @ Otago" event which was then followed by a two-day Software Carpentry workshop. Read more...

Case study: Growing computational capacity among wet-lab scientists

"Coding is something we shouldn’t be afraid of and it is something we should embrace as scientists moving into the future of big data."

Computational lab skills are becoming essential for researchers across disciplines. Use of High Performance Computing infrastructure, such as the one provided by NeSI, requires such skills and one of the key challenges is that learning them is not typically a part of the curriculum. Plant & Food Research (PFR) has successfully leveraged the computational skills training programme supported across New Zealand by NeSI. The basis of this training is the Software Carpentry (SWC) workshop that teaches researchers how to automate their workflows using command line, adapt best practices in programming and use version control. NeSI & Scion Software Carpentry Workshop

The last quarter has been a busy time at NeSI for training activities. On November 24 and 25, we helped run the first Software Carpentry workshop at Scion. 17 researchers attended the event and the workshop was taught by three instructors: Martin Bader (Scion), Luke Boyle (University of Auckland and NZGL) and Aleksandra Pawlik (NeSI).

The workshop was an opportunity for some discussions on the research infrastructure that Scion offers to their researchers. In particular, managing source code through version control. Since the Software Carpentry curriculum also covers Git and GitHub, these discussions fitted the event very well. Read more...
