NeSI thanks Massey University for a great day
NeSI’s first scientific programming workshop of 2014 was a great success thanks to a very warm reception from staff and postgraduates at Massey University. NeSI is building a national programme of workshops and related training events for New Zealand’s scientists and researchers.
Staff from NeSI’s Computational Science Team delivered the full day workshop at Massey University’s Turitea campus outside of Palmerston North. The day focused on programming techniques by researchers worldwide to increase the size of problems that they are able to investigate.
Jaison Mulerikkal, Computational Science Team member, explains: “The structure and content of the workshop was designed to bring relevant tools directly to researchers. Assisting researchers is our focus. Whatever their science goals are, we try to support them.”
“We’ve achieved several outcomes today,” says Tim McNamara, Communities and Communications Programme Lead for NeSI. “As well as the learning outcomes, members of the audience were able to find out who else is interested in scientific programming. Departmental walls can be invisible and yet very thick. Looking inwards, it’s great to see members of the team from across the country come together as they did. Bringing the workshop together involved participation from staff based at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.”
The workshop has already spurred the first application for access to NeSI's HPC platforms from a workshop attendee.
