About Us
On 1 July 2025, the roles, services and technologies of New Zealand eScience Infrastructure were integrated into the crown-owned company, Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ), centralising New Zealand’s eResearch infrastructure.
Together with the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE), REANNZ will ensure computational research projects in New Zealand are backed by the power and support necessary to make them a reality.

About NeSI
A core aspect of NeSI’s purpose was to identify the New Zealand research sector HPC and eResearch needs and to make national infrastructure investments that lead to improved science outcomes and downstream benefits to New Zealand society. As the New Zealand research sector looked to answer national science imperatives across institutional boundaries, NeSI sought to build national capability in running and optimising use of HPC and eResearch infrastructure.
Now more than ever, collaboration is key to maintaining a progressive and sustainable research ecosystem. As a collaboration itself, NeSI welcomed such partnerships - whakawhanaungatanga, our work building shared understanding helped us connect with a research community’s aspirations and goals. Together, we responded to their needs - be it related to computational power, data management, computational thinking, or other advanced digital research capabilities - and better equiped their researchers to deliver new and valuable insights in their fields at local and global scales.
The power behind researchers
NeSI delivered pecialised HPC resources, including tailored software environments and data management services, and skills training in computational research tools and approaches. By using NeSI, researchers across a wide range of communities and disciplines tackled large or highly complicated problems and to investigate scientific challenges that were previously impossible.

Our Structure
National Team
NeSI was powered by a multi-disciplinary team who are employed across the country to accelerate research outcomes across New Zealand.
Governance
NeSI's Board of Directors was comprised of an independent Chair, an independent member representing the research sector at large, and three appointed Directors.
Expert Advice
NeSI’s Research Reference Group was comprised of nine research community leaders with strong technical knowledge on the impact of eScience as an enabler of research.
Our History
NeSI was founded as an unincorporated body, with investment from New Zealand universities, Crown Research Institutes, and the Crown, through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
The original investors were the University of Auckland, NIWA, Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, the University of Otago, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
