NeSI November training events helping share expertise and build capabilities in life sciences communities

NeSI is committed to sharing expertise and building capability in New Zealand’s research communities and institutions, improving researchers’ ability to adopt eResearch techniques that today’s complex questions require.

By November 2020, NeSI and Genomics Aotearoa (in collaboration with others) had provided learning opportunities for 414 attendees since June 2019.

Looking ahead, November continues to be a particularly busy month for supporting these training endeavours, as the NeSI Team is supporting two immersive skill-building events for the bioinformatics and genomics communities in Dunedin and Auckland. These spring and summer schools are part of a larger initiative to raise bioinformatics capability in New Zealand.

2020 Metagenomics Summer School

This is the second year in a row Genomics Aotearoa, the University of Auckland, and NeSI have partnered to host a Metagenomics Summer School, focused on teaching the fundamentals of metagenomics data, data management, and analysis. Held on campus at the University of Auckland, the school last year was a success with 40 participants spending the four days in hands-on sessions related to various concepts of metagenomics data management and analysis for genomics research.

This year's event is looking to be another successful edition, with 40 participants registered again.

Registration for this event has closed, but if you are interested in learning more about the Summer School, you can download the poster by clicking on the image below or contact Genomics Aotearoa's Training Coordinator Ngoni Faya - ngoni.faya@otago.ac.nz - with any questions or requests for more information.

Bioinformatics Spring School 2020

From 23-27 November, NeSI and Genomics Aotearoa are supporting a Bioinformatics Spring School at the University of Otago. The event is designed to give researchers the opportunity to learn about and practice some bioinformatic skills such as:

  • DNA variant calling from next generation sequence data
  • Genotype-by-Sequencing analysis (i.e. RAD-Sequencing)
  • RNA-sequencing differential expression analysis
  • Environmental DNA analysis

along with computational topics such as:

  • Introduction to the Unix commandline (Bash)
  • Introduction to R
  • Introduction to working in a high performance computing environment (provided by NeSI)
  • Introduction to version control using git

Registration has closed, but if you are interested in learning more about the event, visit the Spring School event page.
