NeSI and NIWA partnering to host Cray User Group 2020 meeting
NeSI is partnering with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) to host the Cray User Group (CUG) 2020 meeting in Auckland from Sunday 3 May – Thursday 7 May 2020.
Hosted annually, CUG meetings gather staff and users of select Cray and HPE systems worldwide for presentations by HPC experts, as well as valuable technical sessions, tutorials, and demonstrations. CUG meetings also facilitate member discussions around current experiences, projected trends, and productive collaboration opportunities with sessions led by special interest group leaders and other members of the Cray User Group. Cray and HPE send technical, management, and executive representatives to these events to share information and learn of their members’ needs. Playing upon Auckland's noteriety as the City of Sails, the theme of CUG 2020 is “Sailing into the Future of HPC”. Auckland's beautiful and expansive harbour is the focal point of sailing in New Zealand, and like high performance computing, yachting has made significant technological advances in recent years. As showcased in the 2018 America’s Cup yacht race, hydrofoil design has revolutionised high performance boat design. Yachts are now achieving speeds never thought achievable, as technology pushes the sport into a future of seemingly limitless possibility. The comparison between HPC and sailing is timely, as Auckland is set to host the 2021 America’s Cup.
Cray was recently recognised at the 2019 Supercomputing Conference in Denver, CO, winning nine awards from the editors and readers of HPCwire, as part of the publication’s 2019 Editors’ and Readers’ Choice Awards. The 2019 awards recognized Cray president and CEO, Peter Ungaro , for his leadership in steering the company into the Exascale Era and spurring a number of achievements. The accolades also highlight Cray’s aggressive technological advancements in high performance computing and continued collaborative partnerships with its customers. This marks the 16th consecutive year Cray has been selected for multiple HPCwire awards.
As CUG looks beyond the Cray Xc/CS series of supercomputers, to the new horizons offered by the advances of Shasta, a broad future of possibilities and advancements awaits our discovery. CUG2020 will provide an exciting platform to explore the opportunities and application of HPC in years to come.
