NeSI well-positioned to support proposals to New Zealand Data Science Research Programmes
As submissions are prepared for the New Zealand Government’s new data science investment, NeSI, with its specialised platform of computational and analytics software and services, is well-positioned to support and collaborate with applicants.
The Government is planning to invest in up to four strategic multi-disciplinary data science research programmes, each inspired by real world problems. The new investment is intended to significantly lift New Zealand’s capability, develop useful and transformative data science techniques, and create benefits for New Zealand.
Last year NeSI launched the most advanced, creative, and high-performance computing and data platform ever seen for science in New Zealand. It is supporting new capabilities in genomics research, machine learning applications, and high performance end-to-end data transfers between institutions and NeSI in partnership with national network provider REANNZ and international data transfer partner Globus. Additional new services, such as advanced data analytics tools, virtual laboratory capabilities, and remote visualisation features, are being rolled out over time, with training to ensure ease of use.
This new data science investment is an excellent opportunity to leverage NeSI as an enabler of research across a wide range of communities and disciplines, and as a national collaboration, involving partners the University of Auckland, University of Otago, NIWA, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment.
The total funding available for this new portfolio of data science investments is up to $49 million over 7 years. Funding available for each programme will be between $1 million to $3 million per year for 7 years. Each research programme will be contracted separately.
