RSE-AUNZ at eResearch New Zealand 2025

The RSE-AUNZ community had a presence at eResearch New Zealand 2025, where we shared insights into the current state of the research software engineering (RSE) community in Australia and New Zealand, reflected on our progress towards strategic goals, and engaged in discussions about the future of the profession.

Key Takeaways from Our Presentation

Over the past year, RSE-AUNZ has actively worked towards our 2023–2025 strategy, which focuses on four key goals:

  • Bringing the Community Together – We have strengthened connections through conference participation, leaders’ forums, and online networking spaces.
  • Raising the Profile of RSEs – Through increased advocacy, engagement in publications, and discussions at events like eResearch NZ, we continue to emphasise the critical role RSEs play in research.
  • Fostering a Diverse and Sustainable Community – We are committed to supporting historically underrepresented groups in research software engineering and ensuring accessibility through online events and mentorship opportunities.
  • Developing a Roadmap to a Mature Structure – We are working towards formalising RSE-AUNZ as an incorporated association with a senior advisory board.

Community Feedback and Insights

At eResearch NZ, we engaged in discussions reflecting on live polling that had occurred at previous conferences and other community engagements. This provided valuable feedback on the needs and challenges of our community. Key themes included:

  • A strong demand for better funding and institutional recognition of RSEs.
  • The need for more structured career pathways and mentorship opportunities.
  • A desire for improved networking, both in-person and online, to strengthen connections across the region.

Challenges and Future Directions

The presentation also highlighted ongoing challenges, including sustaining volunteer engagement, increasing advocacy for RSE roles, and securing long-term funding. To address these, we are actively pursuing grant opportunities, refining our engagement strategies, and strengthening collaborations with organisations across different research domains.
