Recap and Highlights: NZ Carpentry Connect 2025
NeSI was proud to host NZ Carpentry Connect 2025 on Monday, February 10 at the University of Canterbury, bringing together the Carpentries community in a hybrid format—both in person at the Beatrice Theatre and online via Zoom.
The event kicked off with an inspiring keynote from Dr. Kari Jordan, Executive Director of The Carpentries, who spoke about the importance of tracing one’s roots and grounding work in core values. Attendees engaged in an interactive reflection on their own Carpentries journeys through a collaborative Google Doc.
Following an hour of networking over kai for in-person attendees, the day resumed with a series of insightful sessions:
- Responsible Machine Learning – Dr. Tom Pollard (MIT)
- Strengthening the Carpentries Instructor Community – Dr. Rina Hannaford (AgResearch)
- Crowdsourcing Motivation – Dr. Murray Cadzow (University of Otago) Developing Trustworthy AI/ML Practices – Chris Endemann (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
- Advanced Git – Iva Momcheva (Max Planck Institute for Astronomy)
- AI-Assisted Coding with Codeium – Olga Minaeva & Giulia Crocioni
A huge thank you to our speakers—many of whom joined from North America and Europe—and to our incredible organizing committee: Tom Saunders (CeR/UoA), Francois Bissey (UC), Michael Coe (UC), Wes Harrell (MWLR), Tyler McInnes (GA), Murray Cadzow (University of Otago), and Rina Hannaford (AgResearch).
We’re grateful to everyone who contributed, presented, and participated—your insights and enthusiasm made this event a success! The collaborative Google Doc with session notes is available here.
