Announcing Indigidata Aotearoa Wānanga 2024
In August 2024, Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI) in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington, NeSI, Time-evolving Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Open Environmental Science (TAIAO), Genomics Aotearoa and the Tikanga in Technology research program will co-host the second Indigidata Aotearoa Wānanga.
Indigidata Aotearoa 2024 will be held in Pōneke (Wellington) from Mane (Monday) 26th August to Wenerei (Wednesday) 28th August, 2024. You can learn more about the programme here.
Building capacity
The aim of Indigidata Aotearoa is to build capacity amongst Māori in: Māori data science, Māori data sovereignty, Māori data ethics, and Māori data applications. The program is open to Māori (tauira, kaitiaki, kaipakihi) who want to better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with māori data science, māori data sovereignty, as well as key technical, cultural and ethical issues.
Following the successful Indigidata model established in the USA, the Indigidata Aotearoa had its inaugral wānanga in August last year. It brought together 23 Māori participants from diverse backgrounds, while creating a platform for robust discussions and knowledge-sharing with some of Aotearoa New Zealand's leading researchers. Plans for 2024
This year's wānanga is a 4 day long residential programme that provides an opportunity for people wanting to expand their knowledge, skills and experience surrounding Indigenous data science and data sovereignty.
The purpose of this kaupapa is to empower Indigenous data scientists to safeguard Indigenous data, enabling communities to harness its potential.
NeSI is excited to see the programme taking shape, and we're in conversation with the organisers about how we can contribute our expertise to sessions that help participants build practical digital skills for research.
Last year, we co-hosted with Genomics Aotearoa an Introduction to Bash coding session and a hands-on workshop on R. Also, to build awareness of how participants can help spread digital skills training to others, NeSI hosted a talk explaining our partnership with The Carpentries, a global community for teaching foundational coding and data science skills to researchers.
