Seminar: "Meteorological computation: From Antarctica to New Zealand"

The first of the NeSI seminar series is beginning with a look into the use of HPC within meterology. The seminar will cover the history of computation within meterology as well as its current application. It is being held at BlueFern on the 30th May 2012 at 11am and available via webcast.

The seminar will introduce a range of meteorological research topics that use computation as their central methodology. Examples include simulating the flow of wind over the Blue Ice Regions in Antarctica to dust transport from Australia to New Zealand. This mode of research is only feasible with advances in supercomputing since the computational grid spacing required for simulating the physical processes is rather small. The seminar will give a historical perspective of the use of computation in meteorology – all the way from hand calculating the weather, to using the state-of-the-art facilities such as BlueFern.
